A Daily Devotional with Pastor Doug Crouse February 23, 2018

Onward and Upward Scripture Reading – Philippians 3:12b (NLT)“But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me."

Have you been watching any of the winter Olympics’ in PyeongChang over these past days? I have been so inspired by Canada, already winning a record setting number of medals. Even though this morning our men’s hockey team lost out to Germany to see who would be playing in the men’s gold medal game against OAR.

What is it that allows a team of Olympic or professional hockey players not only to make the playoffs, but then to arrive at the last series - team one vs. team two - for the coveted gold medal or Cup of Stanley? Is it the coach/assistant coach/one star player/the goalie. In professional sports especially team events any winning team would reply - all of the above!

Even in solo events like golf or swimming - there is no champion who can ever say that all by themselves without any help or investment from anyone else did they achieve their place in the winning circle. There always is a cost and commitment associated with excellence. And the axiom that 'practice makes perfect' is as true in the natural as it is in the spiritual realm.

The Apostle Paul was one of the exemplary leaders of Christianity, acknowledged that for as far as his spiritual journey had taken him to this point that he had not yet arrived at the place of perfection. But he exhorted and modeled that for each of us the calling of God in Christ Jesus is both, 'Onward and Upward'. It is a high, noble and holy calling that every day encourages us to lift up our heads and look at the example of Jesus Christ our Lord, the One who was perfect and holy in every way.

It is to that kind of living that we have been saved. And the pressing on that Paul speaks of is that of an athlete straining with every energy they have towards the final finish line. May we be those who not only look up to Jesus and others for our inspiration, but are able to inspire others to rise to the fullness of their potential for the glory of God.

Jesus has paved the way before us, and He has sent the Person of the Holy Spirit to enable us to greatness for the glory of God.

Prayer Father in heaven, I rejoice in the high and holy calling that You have for me through Jesus Christ my Lord. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may press on towards all God has purposed both in and through my life in Jesus name I pray.

Memory Verse:  Colossians 4:2 NLT“________ yourselves to _______ with an _______ ______ and a __________ heart.”
