Do I Have To? Scripture Reading – Matthew 6:14 (NLT)

"If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins."

Following that prayer, we call, 'The Lords'...but perhaps better tagged as, 'The Believer's Prayer', in which Jesus taught us to pray that our sins would be forgiven in the same manner in which we extend forgiveness to others who have sinned against or offended us, we find a re-emphasis on the importance of forgiveness in the health of a believer in today's text.

Not to be confused that you and I will be admitted into heaven in the same degree which we are perfectly and completely able and willing to forgive others, for that would make forgiveness the work that gets us there instead of the precious blood of Christ Jesus shed on Calvary.

But when it comes to forgiveness, especially in those life situations that really hurt and for which we have no easy answers as to the why, many times in our heart of hearts we ask the Lord, 'Do I Have To?’ To which the answer is.....yes, especially if you want to enjoy the fruit and freedom that Christ Jesus died to bring.

For when you and I choose in Jesus name to forgive others something wonderful happens to us in relation to the life of the Spirit in us. We become more fruitful, therefore experiencing: more of God's love to share with others, joy in all circumstances, peace that really passes our understanding, patience that works maturity in our salvation, kindness that will draw others to Jesus, gentleness that continues to grow, goodness that reminds others of our good God, faithfulness which pleases the Father, and we will display a self-control that is really out of this world.

So when it comes to this question of: 'Really, do I have to forgive'? The best answer in this world and the one to come is: 'No, you really don't have to, but by the grace and for the greater glory of Jesus Christ, you get to!’

Prayer Father I choose to forgive, and live in a posture of forgiveness. I receive the life of the Spirit to be able to do that, and rejoice in the freedom this will bring, both in my life and for others. I ask this in the name of Jesus my Lord.
