Defense and Offense Scripture Reading – Ephesians 6:17b (NLT)

"...and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

As we find ourselves in the middle of May and approaching the beginning of June, it is surprising that the game of professional hockey is still going on. But ongoing it is, to the joy of some and dismay of others. The thing I love about playoff hockey is the absolute dedication of all members to go out and win the prize! However I must confess that since our home team was defeated in game seven last week, my interest has waned.

I am certain that is why the Apostle Paul often drew parallels between the Christian race or life that God has placed us in and athletic achievement and performance. For certain the winners of this year's hockey prize to wrap up sometime in June will need both, 'Defense and Offense' to win. But they will need to press on with all of the will and talent that they have been given by God.

The same is true in the victory that our Lord Jesus Christ has provided for each one of us in the Christian life. He wants us all to strive to reach that goal that He has for us. Yet we each have an enemy who wants to steal, kill and destroy God's best intentions for our lives.

In the armor that God has provided for each one of us to stand it is interesting to note that there are six pieces of defensive equipment for us to put on. Can you imagine for a moment, someone trying to go out into the hockey finals without the proper equipment? A sorry and very short sight to be sure. But there is only one piece of offensive equipment - the Word of the living God. The same one with which our Lord Jesus, the Living Word responded to the enemy with in the times of His temptation saying, 'It is written', each time.

If we are to be successful in the victory that Jesus Christ has provided for us, it will require our proper use and understanding of His holy Word. I can think of no better way than taking and making time to allow His Word to wash over our hearts, minds and lives in order to win the prize for which Christ Jesus has called us to.

Prayer Heavenly Father, thank - You for the Word of God. Help me Holy Spirit to understand and have ears to hear what You are speaking to me through it. I will give myself to growing in grace, understanding and obedience of Your Word, through Jesus Christ my Lord.
